How to Identify and Avoid Dreaded Storm Chasers
When a storm hits your neighborhood, it can bring more than just property damage. A lot of times it will also bring unscrupulous roofing companies known in the industry as storm chasers. Storm chasers prey on unsuspecting homeowners when they are at their most vulnerable, offering cheap repair or restoration services that are questionable to say the very least. To avoid these shady contractors, here are three tips that will help you identify them.
Avoid Offers That Are Too Good to Be True
As the old saying goes, if it’s too good to be true, then it probably is. Storm chasers will often offer irresistible deals to lure you into working with them. If they offer cheap labor, cashback incentives or even to pay for your insurance deductible to get you to sign with them, avoid them at all cost.
Make Sure They Are Local
Before working with a roof replacement company, make sure that the roofers are local. Storm chasers are highly likely to cut corners when it comes to a roofing job, and, by the time you notice anything wrong with your roof, they will be well on their way to the next location, chasing the next big storm and victimizing the next homeowner. If you hire local roofing companies, they will be easy to get a hold of should any issues arise after the job has been completed.
Avoid Large Upfront Payments
Another way to tell if the contractor you are looking to hire is a storm chaser is if they ask for a large down payment. Reputable roofers will usually just ask for a small down payment to cover the initial cost of materials and will not ask for the remaining balance until you are satisfied with the job.
